What is PULPe

We are a group of individuals from all over Europe with a specific interest in childrens upper limb problems. We recognise that each problem is highly individual and that many surgeons work alone in this field. We want to encourage cooperation, mutual discussion and the sharing of experience to benefit the care of the children affected.

We want to create an open group for education in this field and exchange of ideas. This should allow friendships to blossom and with it, ideas for research and international cooperation and assistance. All of our members are English speaking but this isn’t necessarily their primary language and they may be fluent in others.

We do not pretend to have all the answers but do trust that we will critically search for them and the initial step in this is working together. We see that those who are starting in practice are keen but uncertain as this area is such a complex one and we hope that they would benefit from the experience of those who are more senior. That should reduce the risk of the young repeating the mistakes of the old.

Forum for education

We plan to run regular webinars on subjects relevant to both congenital and acquired children’s upper limb problems. These will be directed at those starting in practice but questions and comments by those more experienced will be welcome. They will be in English to allow the broadest participation.

We include a regularly updated timetable of meetings which may be of interest to members of the group.

Forum for exchange between professionals

The European symposium on paediatric upper limb and rehabilitation is run triennially and allows face to face meetings of professionals involved in care of these cases.

Previous meetings have been run in Zurich, Milan, London, and Paris. The last meeting planned in Rotterdam needed to be deferred due to the coronavirus pandemic but has allowed us to see the possibilities available through virtual meetings.

Discussions in an open and frank manner between those who do this work regularly allow new ideas to form and be tested. In addition, the world of children’s hands is relatively small and pleasant and we aim to have fun and enjoy each other’s company when opportunities allow.

The addition of therapy team members to the group is essential as they need to collaborate between themselves and other members of the team. Pathologists, paediatricians, radiologists, psychologists, developmental biologists, geneticists and anyone with an interest in these fields is welcome to join.
