Environmental Health Specialist is responsible for performing professional level environmental sanitation work including inspection, investigation, documentation of State laws and County ordinances and education in various areas such as restaurants and other food service facilities, day care centers, public swimming pools and spas, water systems, tourist and traveler’s facilities. Work is performed under the oversight of a Sanitarian registered in the State of Oregon and the supervision of the Environmental Health Program Manager who reviews work or conformance to applicable laws and regulations. As much of the work performed is in the field, incumbents in this classification are required to exercise considerable independent judgment.
 
This position encompasses 3 levels of employment; Environmental Health Specialists (EHS) begin as a trainee (EHS I) until the candidate successfully passes the exam to become a registered Environmental Health Specialist with the Oregon Health Authority- Health Licensing Office (candidates starting with their certificate will automatically begin at EHS II). Trainees will operate under the restrictions as outlined by the Oregon Health Authority- Health Licensing Office.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS  
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. 
 
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
EHS I – A qualifying bachelor’s degree as determined by the Oregon Health Authority- Health Licensing Office
EHS II – Above requirements, in addition to being a registered Environmental Health Specialist with the Oregon Health Authority- Health Licensing Office
EHS III – Above requirements, in addition to 2 years of supervisory experience
 
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Performing field work requires working in all types of weather conditions in isolated situations, in various types of terrain situations (steep slopes, climbing fences) and in areas of potential environmental health hazards. The position is on-call on a rotating basis to respond to emergency situations which are infrequent (2-3 times per year). Incumbents are also required to perform scheduled weekend and after-hours inspections.
 
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Oregon Driver’s License and a safe driving record.
